Over the years, Starbucks has established itself as a contender in the supermarket ice cream space, most notably with a line of Frappuccino-flavored ice creams. Their newest offering is Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino Ice Cream: a swirl of coffee and chocolate ice creams studded with chocolate cookie pieces.
Due to the swirl, each bite of ice cream actually tastes a little different, containing a varying dominance of chocolate or coffee flavor. (Well, until it melts, and then you get a puddle of mocha).
If you haven't had a chance to try their plain coffee flavor, it bears noting: Starbucks coffee ice cream doesn't taste like Starbucks coffee. In other words, it isn't burnt or acrid, as actual Starbucks coffee can be, but rather has a smooth yet robust coffee flavor. It's definitely the stronger half of this pint—the chocolate swirl was fine, just a pretty standard milk chocolate ice cream. By the time it's all melted together, the ice cream definitely resembles its namesake, the Mocha Frappuccino, though I like the scoopable version better because it's heavier on the coffee and, despite being ice cream, seems less cloyingly sweet.
The ice cream lagged a little in the cookie department. The pieces tasted like tiny crumbs of Oreo-esque chocolate wafers, which is a good thing, but texturally they were gummy and a little soggy. It wasn't too much of a problem because, as far as chunky ice creams go, the crumbs were few and far between. Overall, the strength of the coffee flavor still makes it a pint that I'd pick up when I'm jonesing for some java.
